A late night shot of an ancient buildingthat stands on the Tiber in the Vatican City for almost 2000 years. Built in 130 AD by the Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleumfor himself and his family, it has also been used as barracks, papal fortress,medieval prison and since 1933 as a museum. Originally, it was called “Hadrian’sMausoleum” but according to tradition atthe end of the sixth century there was a procession led by the Pope Gregory(the Great) aiming to pray for the cease of an ongoing plague. When theprocession arrived at the castle, people saw the Archangel Michael standing onthe top of the castle and putting his sword into the scabbard. This gesture wasinterpreted as a sign that the plague would end soon which actually did endsoon. Since then the castle is known as Castel Sant’ Angelo.

This interesting, star-like, mushroom wasnamed “Astraeus” after Astraeus, the father of stars in the ancient Greekmythology. Its “star rays” behave like a barometer. They measure the humidityin the air and if humidity is enough they open up to expose the spore sac. Ifnot, they remain closed to protect it from dry conditions. Because of thisbehavior the mushroom was named hydrometricus which is also of Greek origin andmeans “water- measuring”.
