A rhyton

8011900 [a rhyton]

A rhyton is a liquid container usually in the form of a horn, a head of a woman, or a head of an animal. It was used by the Ancient Greeks and other peoples to pour or drink wine from it during ceremonies.

The rhyton in this photo is made of silver with gold horns and rosette on the forehead. The muzzle, which has the pouring hole, is gold-plated, as were initially the eyes and the inside of the ears. It dates back to 16th c. BC.

Found in Grave IV in the archeological site of Mycenae.

Scopula luridata

DSC_4908 [Scopula luridata]

DSC_4893 [Scopula luridata]

This moth - probably attracted by the electric light sent out through the balcony door in my study at home - landed on the window pane and stayed there patiently until I had time enough to photograph her from both sides.

Wing span is about 3 cm.

I express my appreciation to my friends who identified the moth for me as: Scopula luridata.

A wedding

IMG0595 [Evoia wedding]

On June 21, 2014 I had the pleasure and honor to attend the wedding of two much-loved friends - Iro and Aris - which took place on the tiny island of St. Nicholas in Northern Evoia.

It was "Unforgettable"; to describe it in one word!

We wish them a happy life.

Afternoon coffee at the Acropolis

8014569 [Afternoon coffee at the Acropolis]

Seeing these young people enjoy their afternoon coffee on the rocks near the Acropolis, I hesitated to approach them with my camera in hand, as I might be considered an “intruder” but I was pleasantly surprised at how polite they were while they were giving me the permission to record the moment photographically. Thank you guys!

Oriental beauty in Athens

801_4544 [Oriental beauty]

It seems to be trendy these years for young couples from the Orient to choose the Greek islands or Athens as the location for their wedding ceremony. According to official reports in 2013 more than 1200 couples from abroad came to Greece for that purpose. In this photo a happy bride is posing in front of the Acropolis in an effort to combine her “dream day” with her “dream place” to visit. We wish them all a very happy life.
