Patroklos and the Milky Way

I had just taken a series of photos of a lunar eclipse over the Temple of Apollo on Cape Sounio [You can see the eclipse here.] and was about to return home when the boats near the little island of Patroklos and their reflections on the water looked tempting to my sleepy eyes at 1:30 in the morning. I confess, I am not strong enough to resist photographic temptations, so I decided to take 1-2 more photos - the last ones - for the night. The stars above were not visible to the human eye but PhotoPills - my mobile photo-advising App - ensured me that part of the Milky Way was still over the little island of Patroklos at that time.

So, I turned my camera towards a new direction and once again yielded to the temptation.

The outcome on the computer screen on the following day reminded me of David’s Psalm that reads:

“The heavens declare the glory of God; The skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Total lunar eclipse 2018

While planning the eclipse shoot, I fancied capturing the whole duration of the eclipse in one composite shot. 
When I arrived on the spot, I realized - to my frustration - there was nothing more impossible, given the unusually long duration of the eclipse and the limitations of my equipment. So, I had to compromise and shoot only the first half of it, as seen above.

In the center of the picture, above the Temple of Poseidon, one can see the planet Mars, the guest star of the night!

The Temple of Poseidon was built circa 440 BC on Cape Sounio
and was dedicated to Poseidon, the "God of Sea"
according to the Greek mythology.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is a colossal ruined temple in the center of Athens that was dedicated to Zeus, the Father of the Olympian gods and of all men. Its construction began in the 6th century BC but it was completed 638 years later! It was planned to be the greatest temple in the ancient word built on a platform of 41x108m with a total of 104 columns that would stand 17m high and 2m in diameter! At its short-lived glory it housed a huge gold and ivory statue of Zeus BUT ... An interesting story - good to know - but I'm afraid this blog is not the best place for detailed information.

The Temple of Aphaia

 The Temple of Aphaia stands on a hill in the north-eastern part of the Greek island of Aegina. It is interesting to know that its location forms an isosceles triangle with the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio. The Temple was originally built in the 8th century BC and rebuilt in 560 BC but in the pictures here we see its 3rd construction that has been standing there since about 500 BC. It was dedicated to a Cretan goddess and was wealthily decorated with sculptures that one can see today in the Munich Glyptothek.
