The head of a lion.

 

Figures like this, pouring water through their mouth, decorate fountains in numerous parts of the world. Curious to know where this one was found? Follow your imagination to Italy, … to Rome, … to Plazza del Popolo, … to the Obelisk in the center of the Plazza, … and look at the base of the Obelisk. Four similar lions stand there, each one on a small pyramid and constitute the Fountain of the Lions: A piece of work designed by the Italian architect Valadier in 1823.

One’s missing! Where’s she gone?

This is part of the façade of a building next to the “Fulton Grand Canal” hotel on The Grand Canal in Venice [See picture below]. While I found amusing the sight of penguins on the balcony watching cruise boats go by, I was also curious to know why one of the penguins in the lower right balcony was missing. Where had she gone? I wonder!

"Dona i ocell"

“Dona i ocell” [Woman and Bird] was created in 1982 by the Spanish Catalan artist Joan Miró in collaboration with Gardy Artigas.
The statue - 22m high - is made of concrete and is covered with ceramic tiles that were styled by Joanet Gardy Artigas. Today, it can be seen in Parc Joan Miró in Barcelona.

The church was completed and consecrated in 558 A. D. It is considered to be the oldest church in Paris.

In one of its side chapels one can see the tomb of the French philosopher and mathematician Rene Descartes.

Ponte vecchio in Florence

Ponte Vecchio is a medieval bridge on the Arno River and one of the most frequently visited attractions in Florence. It was originally constructed in Roman times but in 1333 it was destroyed by flood and had to be reconstructed on redesigned foundations where it stands since then. It is the only bridge in the city spared by the Germans during their retreat in World War II.

Castel Sant’ Angelo

A late night shot of an ancient building that stands on the Tiber in the Vatican City for almost 2000 years.  Built in 130 AD by the Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family, it has also been used as barracks, papal fortress, medieval prison and since 1933 as a museum. Originally, it was called “Hadrian’s Mausoleum”  but according to tradition at the end of the sixth century there was a procession led by the Pope Gregory (the Great) aiming to pray for the cease of an ongoing plague. When the procession arrived at the castle, people saw the Archangel Michael standing on the top of the castle and putting his sword into the scabbard. This gesture was interpreted as a sign that the plague would end soon which actually did end soon. Since then the castle is known as Castel Sant’ Angelo.
