Ponte Vecchio is a medieval bridge on the Arno
River and one of the most frequently visited attractions in Florence. It was
originally constructed in Roman times but in 1333 it was destroyed by flood and
had to be reconstructed on redesigned foundations where it stands since then.
It is the only bridge in the city spared by the Germans during their retreat in
World War II.
