Mola

Mola is an area of outstanding natural beauty at an altitude of 1000 m. on Mount Parnitha in Attica
and is a pole of attraction for every visitor of the mountain.
There are beautiful meadows with springs of water, organized places of recreation and a little chapel.

The main point of reference in the area is the chapel of Saints Peter and Paul around which there are tables for family picnics, a spring with cold drinking water, and even a small outdoor theater.
Unfortunately, it presents a disappointing image of abandonment both externally and internally and one may even wonder it has ever been used for service.

Getting a few more drops of water from the nearby spring for the trip back to Athens.

UDCH7440 [hollow tree]

This tree, with its hollow and “see-through” trunk, is located behind the chapel.
Ιt’s shape, coupled with the fact that you can see through the trunk whatever happens on the road behind the tree, is a pure photographic challenge.
The photographer in the center, who is taking a picture of the spring [above], was added afterwards to demonstrate the idea of the “see-through trunk”.

The pictures were taken in April 2014.

Crocus nivalis

803_9709 HF [Crocus nivalis]

This little beauty seems to be very “brave” since she blooms in the middle of winter.
Her picture was taken in Anthusa, near Athens, under freezing weather conditions.

When a few minutes later I saw this bunch of Nivalis grown so close to each other,
I remembered the Penguins who huddle together to protect themselves from bitter cold!

Arctia festiva

803_5933 [Arctia festiva]

This 35mm long caterpillar kept moving carefree while I was taking the picture.
She was probably overconfident that her (ugly? hairy? repulsive? frightening?) look
that constitutes her defense mechanism against predators would protect her.

However, when a clumsy movement on my part disturbed her, she instinctively stopped,
curled up and remained motionless as shown above.

When time comes, following a series of transformational steps,
she turns into this moth called Arctia festiva.

Crocus cartwrightianus

This beautiful flower blooms in Autumn at heights from sea-level up to 1000 meters usually on rocky hillslopes and low shrubbery in Attica, Cyclades islands and Crete. It is the wild ancestor of the cultivated Crocus sativus from which the well-known saffron is produced.

All were photographed on Mt. Hymittos in November 2021.
