Crocus pallasii

Crocus pallasii is an Autumn crocus, with wide distribution

from West Asia to the Balkans.

In Greece, it used to grow locally on the Aegean islands of Chios, Samos and Lesvos

but, I hear, it has recently also been found in various spots of mainland Greece.

One of those spots is Mt. Hymittos where the above pictures were taken.

It flowers in rocky habitats at altitudes of 50 to 2000 m.

This species of crocus is pretty similar to cartwrightianus

but it differs in the branches of the style

and occasionally in the color of the tepals.

 

It is found in stony locations and shrublands

in the wide area from the Balkan to Iran.

 

In Greece, it thrives on some Aegean islands

and on a few areas of the mainland at altitudes of 50m to about 2400m.

 

It blooms from October to November.

Crocus pallasii could be considered an oriental species since it grows on areas of the Balkan Peninsula, the Aegean islands of Lesbos and Chios, Israel, and even further to West Iran. Relatively recent it was also found on Mt. Hymittos where this picture was taken. 

 

It grows from October to December on stony or rocky slopes and bears flowers in various shades of lilac.

Crocus pallasii flowers from October to November usually on stony areas and in thin shrub

in countries from the Balcan to Iran.

In Greece, until a few years ago, it was believed to grow only on the East Aegean Islands

but now it is known to have been recorded on the Greek mainland as well.

Color-wise, it comes in all shades of lilac.

 This crocus grows in countries extending from the Balkan Peninsula to Iran.

In Greece it flowers during the months of October, November and December mostly on some east Aegean islands

but there are reports that it was found in Macedonia and Thessaly as well.

In Attica, as far as I know, it grows only on a very small area high up on Mt. Hymittos.

This Autumn-flowering crocus grows from the Balkan Peninsula to West Iran but on the Greek territory - as far as I know - it can be found only on the islands of Chios and Lesvos. For some reason it also grows on one specific spot on Mt. Hymittos with its tepals being whitish rather than the commonly purple-lilac tepals of its “cousin” Crocus cartwrightianus [see here].
